We offer the NRA Home Firearm Safety, which is valid for the MA LTC & FID (currently). We also offer some USCCA courses. And we do live fire courses to you can learn to use your handgun.
The shortest and quickest class is NRA Home Firearm Safety. It's 4 hours long.
This course covers firearm safety, loading and unloading of several firearms, and ammunition knowledge. It also covers Massachusetts gun laws, although we are not lawyers. The last section covers how and where to apply, costs, etc.
Yes and no.
There are several states that accept the MA LTC. And there are many states that do not.
There are law for carrying and for transporting, which are not the same.
We encourage people to check out handgunlaw.us for laws around the United States.
Of course! And you should!
Once you have a handgun, you need to take a few lessons to get comfortable with it, to learn to shoot it, and clean it.
The Utah license is valid in 30 other states as a non-Utah resident.
There are 29 states, currently, that have what we call "Constitutional Carry" or "permitless carry". But you still need to follow each state's gun laws. For example, you may not be able to carry into a restaurant that serves alcohol even if you are not consuming alcohol.
There are several steps to get the MA LTC/FID. It's not necessarily difficult, but it does cost a little bit of money and can take some time.
First, you have to take an approved course and get a certificated.
Then, you get an application and set up an interview with the local police. At the interview, they will take the application, certificate and a check or money order for $100. They'll fingerprint and photograph you. Then do a background check and send everything to the state police.
The state police do another background check. Once that has been approved, they'll make the license and send it to the local police. The local police call you and you can pick it up at the station.
The cost of the LTC is $100 for residents over 18. For an FID for someone under 18, it's $25. The LTC/FID is valid for up to 6 years.
For non-Massachusetts residents, it's still $100 but the LTC is only valid for one year.
The FID, Firearm Identification card, allows someone to possess and purchase non-large capacity rifles and shotguns. But not semi-automatic rifles or shotguns. It is usually issued to someone who is over 15 years old but under 21 years old.
The LTC, License To Carry, allows you to possess non-large capacity and large capacity rifles, shotguns, and handguns. The LTC is for anyone over 21 years old.
Yes, there were a lot of changes in 2024.
For people getting the LTC after August 1, 2024, they'll need "new training" when they renew in six years. But the Commonwealth won't have that training until April 2026.
Of course!
The NRA Home Firearm Safety is a non-live firing course. We just need a TV with an HDMI input, a table to put the goodies on, and at least a half a dozen of your friends!
That's a great question!
First, I'd start with a one on one to learn to use your handgun. Learn the fundamentals of shooting, eye dominance, grip, stance, etc.
If you're interested in home defense, we offer a USCCA course (two how seminar) about how to make your house safer and what you should consider to do so.
If you're interested in self defense, we've got a USCCA course for that, too! We have a seminar about the legal aftermath of using your firearm in self defense.
